These are some typical questions we are often asked:

Q. I have just graduated and need to gain experience but need experience to get a job.
What should I do?

A. We suggest that you identify specific organisations you would like to work for, such as galleries or auction rooms, and contact them to obtain unpaid or voluntary work. Some places offer internships for graduates. This will appeal to a prospective employer and help give you the edge over other graduates.

Q. I have built a career in Sales and Marketing in telecommunications, and am interested in working in the arts sector. Can you give me any advice?

We welcome people from other industries – many skills are transferable and highly sought after. Give us a call and we will advise you on your best course of action.

Q. I am currently working for a London auction house, and would like to move to the provinces. How can I be sure that my employer won’t find out about me registering with you?

We are fully aware of how close-knit the art and antiques business is, and we pride ourselves on our discretion. Please rest assured that any communication we have with you will be confidential and discrete.

Q. As a non UK resident can you give advice on a work visa for the UK.

This can be difficult in such a competitive field, but you need to be aware that there are four main types of work visas:-

Working Holiday Visa – this allows Commonwealth Citizens to come to the UK for an extended holiday, up to a maximum of two years, and to work full-time for this time in temporary or contract positions only.

Ancestry Visa – Commonwealth Citizens with grandparents who were born in the UK are allowed to stay up to four years with no restrictions on work during this time, and includes being able to take up permanent employment. Towards the end of the four year visa, you are able to apply for permanent residency.

Right of Abode – If you are a Commonwealth Citizen born in the UK or one of your parents was born in the UK, you are able to obtain a Certificate of Entitlement to Right of Abode. This means that you are free to work and live in the UK indefinitely, and the Certificate of Entitlement remains valid for the life of your passport.

Spouse Visa – If you are married to a British passport holder, or a person with an Ancestry Visa, you can apply for a Spouse Visa. At first, this is granted for a year, and allows you to work full time, but on a temporary basis. After this, you will need to apply again for either an extension or a permanent visa, depending on your personal circumstances.
